Titansteel Bars are one of those products that seems to be used for just about everything. Check out the Wowhead “Reagent for” tab, and you’ll see what I mean. It is also used in very large quantities by the more popular items, like the iLvl 264 BoE crafted items. One way or another, titansteel is one of those things that seems to have bottomless demand and is therefore an excellent product to sell.

High demand means high profit?

OK, so it’s not perfect. Titansteel may always sell quickly, but that just means you’ll have more competition. Also, every buyer has a fairly good idea of what market price is, so when the supply dries up, you can’t make too much of a premium. Let’s look at your costs.

• 3 titanium bars, usually made from a total of 24 Saronite Bars (or 20 if you’re a transmutation master with a 20 percent bonus to yield).
• An Eternal Fire, either purchased from the AH or Frozo.
• An Eternal Earth and Shadow, never purchased from Frozo.

It’s incredibly simple: Assuming you can smelt and have an alchemist, simply smelt saronite, transmute titanium and transmute titansteel. The rest comes from the AH. Your costs are easy to calculate. I’ll give you an example using prices from my realm.

Saronite Ore on a weekday is about 16g a stack, fires are usually about 19g, earths are usually about 3.5g, and shadow is about 7. Final cost: 61.5g. I can sell titansteel for about 75g some days.

Some days?

OK, realistically that’s only on the weekends if your competition is out of stock or busy. The nice part of selling titansteel is that it’s mostly AFK work to makel however, it’s a lot of AFK work. On the weekends, most people like to, you know, actually play. Unless we’re crazy enough to have purchased a second account just to do trade skills without costing us playtime, then we’re going to be limited in how much of the stuff we can crank out in a week. Just look at the time costs: Transmuting three titanium takes 15 seconds, and smelting 20 saronite bars takes 30 seconds. Plus you have to buy all the base materials and run around emptying and refilling your bags.

As with any market that only has a single end product, your pricing and posting methods will be a large factor in your success. When you’re pricing your titansteel, remember that there’s a very hefty deposit cost. Personally, I list smallish batches for 12 hours; however, whenever I notice that the competition is running low, I’ll blast out 50 bars or so. I wouldn’t take that risk if I knew I’d be undercut right away, but when the conditions are right, I can make 750g profit in a night. If the crafting was true AFK time (as in time that didn’t take me away from some other auctioneering task), it’s very much worth it. One problem I run into periodically is campers who never list more than 12 bars with a short duration, but check the auction house (seemingly) 10 times a night. The best way to deal with these people is to either camp back (use the mobile app if you have to) or undercut until they lose interest or start buying you out.

Lastly, since there is a decently long turnaround on making new stock, this is one of those markets where you might be able to turn a quick profit overcutting when the supply starts to thin, buying competitors’ stock and listing it yourself.

As for stack size, I like to list them in singles and doubles simply because there’s no one recipe that’s more popular than all the others. I’ve sold stacks of 20 before at a good price, but that was right after the removal of the titanium transmute cooldown, and back then, mats were cheaper.

Saronite sink

I like to think of titansteel as a saronite sink. Not that I’ve needed one for a few months, but every so often, I find way more saronite than I could ever conceivably prospect or use some other way, and this is a simply way to get rid of it for a decent profit. If the titansteel market is saturated, I’ll also just sell titanium or saronite bars, but one of the nice things about titansteel is that there’s so much consistent demand.

Almost all auction house tactics revolve around the undercut. It may be a single copper, a few silver or a few gold, or a freefall drop down to the price of materials. Regardless of the amount or the frequency, most undercuts share a common misconception: that you’re controlling the market with your undercuts. You’re not. Your competitor has the control. By undercutting, you’ve just let your competitor decide your price. You’ve let your competitor set a cap on your profits — and more, you’ve agreed to accept even less with your undercut.

The inscription market sees more than its fair share of this, sometimes on a large scale. The low deposits encourage large number of postings, followed by even larger numbers of cancellations and repostings. Prices fall as each new poster accepts and trumps the previous poster’s prices, until the market falls to the cost of materials and the walls go up. The final wall signals a complete loss of market control.

Once it’s up, it no longer matters who built the wall. If it’s your wall, you can’t raise prices until the competition perched above you goes away. If it’s not your wall, you can’t raise prices on your auctions until someone breaks the wall. Stalemate, and out come the piña coladas.

The event that started all of this, from the first round of undercuts to the market-ending wall, is actually really simple: Your competitor listed his auctions before you did. Your first reaction was to lower your price, and everyone else followed suit. Had your competitor not posted his auctions, you would have raised your prices instead of lowering them.

In the end, the only way to truly control a market is to prevent your competitor from posting. While simple in concept, in reality, this can be a huge undertaking. What we call auction house PvP may be needed to push someone out of a market when he doesn’t want to leave. There are really only a few ways to drive out a competitor and make him take his wall with him: boredom, attrition and starvation.

When a competitor goes overboard building his wall and starts posting hundreds or thousands of auctions at a time, he probably hasn’t considered what’s going to happen to his mailbox 48 hours later. I’ve seen attempts to form glyphs walls using 10 of each glyph. That’s 3,550 glyphs. If they expire (or are canceled), the poster gets to spend 71 minutes digging them out of the mailbox. The geniuses that post 12 pages of single pieces of Infinite Dust will spend an hour restacking them if they were to expire.

Use this wasted time to your advantage. When you see someone going nuts with his postings, start adding new auctions to block his sales, even if they cost you a small amount of gold. If he cancels and relists, you’ve just caused your competitor to lose a couple hours of his time. Repeat this process a few times and his gold-per-hour numbers will quickly be in the toilet, and he may start looking for something to do that doesn’t involve standing by the mailbox all evening.

No deposit, no return

On small items such as glyphs and infinite dust, the auction house deposit fees are insignificant, which led to these markets’ being vulnerable to flooding and continuous cancel-and-relist cycles.

Other markets have much different dynamics. While someone’s posting up 100 Eternal Belt Buckles may look intimidating, forcing them all to expire will cost their owner about 240g in unreturned deposit fees. If he starts canceling and relisting because of your auctions, he gets to pay the deposit fees again. In these markets, forcing the wall to expire isn’t just about reducing your competitor’s income or making him waste his time; it’s a way to take gold directly out of his pocket. This is one way to directly pit your gold reserves against the competition’s.

I’ve seen a number of players leave the jewelcrafting market — even dropping the profession entirely — because they couldn’t grasp that their 48-hour auctions could be turned against them. After days or weeks of expired and relisted auctions, they were oftentimes paying more in deposit fees than they made from selling the gems. The more gems they cut, the more gold they lost.

The embargo: A bottoms-up view of the market

Almost all crafted items in the game come from just a few basic items: ore, herbs, cloth and eternals. Even complicated markets such as inscription, with all of its inks and glyphs and cards, can be boiled down to just a few basic ingredients: adder’s tongue, icethorn and eternal life. That’s it. The glyphs are just red herrings obscuring the real issue: Your competitor isn’t competing with you in selling glyphs; he’s competing with you in buying herbs.

To stop someone from posting glyphs, you need to run him out of ink. To run him out of ink, you have to run him out of herbs. The only way to do this over the long run is to buy all of the herbs by embargoing the auction house.

The embargo works by buying as much of the raw materials as possible to keep them away from the competition. Each stack of herbs is half a dozen glyphs the competition won’t be selling. A hundred stacks is 600 glyphs they won’t be listing. The goal is to allow the undercutters to keep selling their items, but prevent them from crafting replacements. Let them have their low-price walls, since you need them to sell what they already have. Their sales will eventually use up the last of their stockpiles, and the wall will disintegrates on its own. With the wall gone, prices will rise rapidly along with your profits, since you’re the only one left with any herbs. (We can dream, can’t we?)

The embargo starts by picking a price that’s unaffordable for the competition to maintain his selling price. If he’s selling glyphs for 3g, buying any herbs less than 25g a stack will quickly complicate his plans. If he has herb farmers sending him cheap herbs, offer to pay more. By cleaning all of their materials out of the auction house, the battle changes from who has the lowest selling price to who is willing to pay the most for materials. While before you were forced to react to your competitor’s postings, he is now being forced to react to your purchases.

Embargoes aren’t limited to just the herb market, of course. Buy up all of the saronite ore, and the jewelcrafters stop prospecting gems. Buy up all of the eternal earth, and they stop making jewelry and a large source of infinite dust goes away. No eternal water, no Eternal Belt Buckles. No eternal life, no Darkmoon cards. Buy up all the Righteous Orbs, and you don’t have to worry about anyone else making Crusader scrolls. (When you hear gold tycoons talk about “shutting down the market”, this is what they are referring to.)

What to do with it all

A successful embargo could leave you holding on to hundreds or thousands of stacks of herbs and ore as your purchases start to outrun your sales. You don’t want to sell them, because you’d just be breaking your own embargo when a competitor buys them. There comes a point when making the goods go away becomes just as important as buying them in the first place.

One method of disposing of herbs is our dear friend Jessica. The Ink of the Sea from a hundred stacks of herbs down can be traded in for three stacks of Snowfall Ink. A dozen Darkmoon decks will consume a thousand stacks of herbs. You can make a lot of herbs go away with this method and might even make a profit out of it.

Inscription also isn’t the only market for herbs. Rolling an alchemist to make flasks and potions can be a handy way to take excess herbs out of the glyph market, as each flask uses half a stack of herbs. With the introduction of Frozo, the price of Frozen Orbs is closely linked to the price of frost lotus and eternal life, so your flask operation could be running into the back end of your own embargo.

Another common target for embargoing is saronite ore, which has the advantage of having multiple methods of disposal. It can be prospected into gems and dust, and alchemists will take some of the gems to transmute into epics. It can be smelted and sold to a vendor, or it can be transmuted into titanium bars. It takes 16 stacks of saronite ore to make one stack of titanium bars, and 48 stacks will make a stack of titansteel.

The beta is providing a lot of tantalizing hints about what professions will be like in the expansion. There have been enormous efforts to reconcile the relative power levels of each profession, and I think the developers have made huge strides in that regard.

Random stats on crafted items are making a comeback through items like Charred Dragonscale Shoulders. While these shoulders are obviously a shaman item, since hunters don’t use their intellect, the random enchant portion will keep the shoulders interesting for many of our dearly beloved totem jockeys. (Heck, inevitably a hunter or two will be wearing them, despite the intellect.) Since intellect will provide direct scaling to spellpower, that random stat bonus could be very interesting.

Multiple skill-ups

We can’t forget that some difficult-to-make recipes can result in more than one skill-up. While I’ve not seen it confirmed yet, I wouldn’t be surprised to see items like the Earthsoul Boots providing multiple skill-ups. Not only is the item itself purple, the recipe requires a leatherworking of 475 to perform.

Engineering

Engineering is getting some pretty nice benefits in Cataclysm. The big news is that engineers will be getting jewelcrafting-like bonuses from cogwheels and hydraulic pumps. These engineer-only enhancements will socket onto their gear. Those of you who’ve been dying to roleplay engineering-based power armor soldiers will finally get your chance.

There are other enhancements for engineer’s gear also, of course. Synapse Springs will enhance intellect for a period of time, and other gadgets are being added all the time. It seems as if Cataclysm will finally be the expansion in which engineers get some stat parity with other professions.

There’s no announced equivalent of the Mechano-hog yet, though, which is kind of a bummer. But, like I’ve said before, Cataclysm is still in the beta; anything could change. We can still hope for a goblin-themed hot rod or something.

Enchanting

Enchanting has always been a workhorse profession. Ever since the days of vanilla World of Warcraft, getting your gear properly enchanted has been the way to signify yourself as a knowledgeable player. In Cataclysm, that’s not really going to change.

What is going to change, however, is the addition of new procs and new enchanting dynamics. I can’t help but hope that some of the proc-based enchants will make it to raiding level, instead of simply being marginalized as “leveling enchants.” Weapon enchants like Landside, though, are almost definitely going to be first-tier raiding enchants, which is at least a little more interesting than plain old raw strength or agility.

Alchemy

Alchemy actually feels a lot like it did in Wrath of the Lich King, with a few relatively minor exceptions. The alchemist’s stone is pretty cool, and its metric ton of stamina proves that the developers are serious about making sure everyone cares about survivability. The transmutation structure for pyrium resembles the metal from Wrath, but the krovalian gold required by engineers could be a nice touch. If the teleportation potion makes it to live servers, we could see alchemists selling quick trips to Deepholm.

These gimmicks aside, though, alchemy is alchemy. You make potions to restore mana and health, and flasks to buff various stats. Like enchanting, alchemy has always been such a staple of successful WoW careers that it’s hard to improve on such a reliable craft.

Blacksmithing

We’re already seeing some awesome gear for blacksmiths to make. Even the poleaxe carries over 500 stamina. Blacksmiths are going to be incredibly busy supplying raiders and PvP players their initial gear, since it seems likely that this crafted gear will be the best stuff available before the first tier of endgame content.

We can only hold on tightly while we wait to see what else will be revealed in the beta. It’s still a little early to feel like we’re seeing final versions of anything, but professions seem like they’ll play a vital role to kickstarting any character into the endgame. This will feel like a repeat to those of us who were busy crafters at the beginning of Wrath, but hopefully the good times will last a little longer this time.

You’ve got your startup gold, epic flying, and if need be a steady stream of gold through daily quests. It’s not enough, you want more. The next step up the gold making ladder is the resource gatherer. These players pick up tradeskills like Herbalism, Mining, and less commonly Skinning and traverse the world picking up items that are useful to other tradeskills.

Which Gathering Profession to Pick?

For the serious money maker you’ll want to write off skinning immediately. Skinning requires you to not only kill mobs, but they also must be beasts. Finding and killing mobs is significantly more time consuming than flying around looking for mineral nodes. Leather goods gained from skinning also are basically only used by leatherworkers, and leatherworking is far from the most lucrative profession. You’ll want to ignore this skill completely.

Herbalism is a fabulous skill to have and can be huge money depending on the server you’re on. Herbs are used by alchemists to create potions and flasks, materials which are always on demand due to the fact that they are non-reusable consumables. Herbs gathered in Northrend also have a chance to drop Crystallized Life, 10 of which can be combined to make Eternal Life — another valuable trade good. If you decide to go the route of the herbalist it’s important to know which herbs are the best money for your time spent and where to find them.

Lichbloom: Found in Icecrown and Storm Peaks, this is an ingredient in the two most common types of flasks. As such, it is usually very high in demand. The best zone to gather this herb in is Storm Peaks because there are less mobs and more herb spawning points.
Adder’s Tongue: Located in Scholazar Basin only, but in huge abundance. This is the best herb to ‘mill’ for inscriptionists due to it milling into Snowfall Ink fairly frequently. It is also the primary ingredient in Potions of Speed which are used in massive amounts by raiders.

Depending on what you decide you’d like to farm (or what items you might need) you’ll find yourself gathering in either Storm Peaks or Scholazar Basin pretty much all the time. Scholazar is a very herb friendly zone that possesses practically double the amount of herb spawns of any other zone — you’ll be flitting from node to node making tons of gold in no time.

Reminder for Druids: Herbalism is for you! Druids can stay in their Epic Flight Form while picking herbs without being switched out of, so this means that you can essentially gather while mounted. The ability to do this is a massive advantage and pushes herbalism over the top for Druids in terms of ease and efficiency.

Mining is infamous for being the most reliably lucrative gathering profession dating back to Vanilla WoW. Miners gather metal ores and occasionally rare gems. Ores can be smelted into metal bars used to craft Blacksmithing and Engineering items, and ores can also be prospected by Jewelcrafters to produce rare gems. Due to the sheer number of uses for the products that Mining yields it is always in demand.

Mining differs from Herbalism in a few ways, the most important of which is that there are far fewer mining nodes active at the same time than herb nodes. This means that in the same amount of time you’ll gather a much larger number of herbs than you would metal ores. This is where the economics of your particular server come into play in deciding which route you’d like to go. If Saronite Ore, for example, is less expensive than Adder’s Tongue then it’s a no brainer, you’re going to make a killing on Herbalism. However, if herbs are cheap and minerals are prohibitively expensive on your server you’re going to be better off with Mining so do some research!

It’s also important to remember that if you double up your gathering profession with a production profession it’s going to be a great help if they synergize well together.

These synergies should definitely factor into your decision for what gathering skill you pick up if you’re planning to branch into producing a particular type of good.

Efficiency: Making your life easy

The difference between making good money gathering and making great money gathering is efficiency. You need to know where resource nodes spawn and have a ‘path’ that you use to navigate a zone. You’re going to obviously need Northrend Epic Flying to move around quickly — a 280% speed mount is great, a 310% mount is even better. Another thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to want a lot of bag space for those marathon gathering sessions. In two hours of solid herb gathering in Scholazar Basin it’s not unusual to use 60 or more bag slots so be prepared!

Sometimes you’re going to want to prioritize gathering certain types of resources over others. When you’re dealing with hundreds of different spawning locations it’s difficult to remember exactly what spawns where. This is where Gatherer comes in. I mentioned this mod on the first page of the guide, and for a good reason. Gatherer remembers the location of every mineral or herb node you’ve ever gathered and will display it on both your mini-map and your world map. This will allow you to easily see where everything can be found!

Gathering materials efficiently will provide all the gold you could ever need for your day to day WoW needs as well as a substantial surplus, but it does take time. Much like Questing for gold, you’re spending your time to collect things for resale or to be reprocessed. This is much more rewarding than questing, but is not the final stage of gold gathering mastery.

I’ve said before that farming professions are usually a waste of time. The opportunity cost of a farming profession is another crafting profession, which could make you so much more money per hour that you can always afford to buy the mats you need. The exception to this rule is mining.

All the gathering professions are simple and no risk. You pay nothing but time to level them, and you are able to make money by using them without risking anything but, again, time. The difference between your average player and an auctioneer, however, is that the auctioneer is always measuring his success in gold per hour. Extremely good farmers can do better than extremely bad auctioneers, however if you’re capable of being an extremely good farmer, you’re probably capable of being at least a good auctioneer, and are spending those hours doing a more repetitive, less interesting task for less money.

Mining is the exception to this rule because it opens up the ability to perform several very important transformations:

• Smelting ore into bars
• Smelting bars and elementals into Titansteel

No other gathering skill has a requirement for processing raw mats in the gathering skill itself. All herb based professions either use raw herbs or have the processing skill built in, and leatherworkers process raw mats from skinning. Additionally, mining supplies raw mats for three crafting professions; only one of which (jewelcrafting) uses unprocessed ore.

Do you actually mine?

No, I don’t. I mined to get my skill up, and I’ll mine for the first week or so in a new expansion. Aside from that, though, there’s never any reason for me to spend my time gathering. Assuming the opportunity cost of an hour is, say, 2000g in lost AH profits, I can always get more ore for 2000g than I can mine in an hour. This will likely not be true when Cataclysm launches, which is why I’ll mine for a week or so when it starts.

What I use my miner for is vast amounts of AFK smelting. I stockpile Cobalt Ore and Saronite Ore when they’re close to my target prices, and smelt it as I need it. Saronite can be smelted and vendored for 25g a stack, so if the ore is ever under 12.5g a stack, I’ll buy every last scrap of it and mail it to my smelter (with the understanding that I’ll never actually vendor Saronite Bars — I simply use their vendor value as a cost limiter). You can store as many mails as you want on a single character for 30 days, however you can only see 50 at a time. I use one character specifically for storing massive quantities of herbs and ore, who never gets any mail that I could conceivably miss. Every 28 days, I mass-return the mail to my purchaser, who will open and resend them all.

Why am I smelting ore? There’s a variety of reasons.

• I use tons of Cobalt Bars to make enchanting mats. When I’m saturated with enchanting mats, I sell the bars for almost double the ore on a regular basis because people often don’t have a miner capable of smelting this.
• I use tons of Saronite Bars for tons of things, including making Titanium Bars and belt buckles. I also sell Saronite Bars for a nice margin over the two ore it took to make them
• I smelt Truesilver and make a decent profit because of all the neat toys that still call for the bars. In fact, I smelt many different types of old world ores and sell the bars for a decent markup, considering that most of the work is done whilst I watch Dr. Who.
• I smelt Titansteel when the prices go far enough above the mats cost to be worth the trouble.

Generally, I wouldn’t suggest trying to get into blacksmithing or engineering for profit unless you have a miner that allows you to buy ore instead of bars.

Ok, ok. I’ll get a miner.

Good. Now remember that unless you’re a tank, you probably won’t want to mine on any character you plan on playing seriously. You’re costing yourself a serious profession perk and replacing it with a dinky amount of bonus stamina. Also, druids can mine while shape-shifted without changing. Paladins, DKs and hunters all have fairly accessible mount speed talents available to them. Hunters can Feign Death out of annoying patrolling mobs. No matter who you pick, getting to 450 skill will be a seriously annoying process unless you have a epic flying mount with Cold Weather Flying.

You’re going to make a 65 DK anyways, right? He’s a good choice for people who want a miner but don’t want to have to level one.

Every profession has some way of making money. You have different types of markets available and a limit of the number of professions you can have per character. This means that whether you’re just getting started on the auction house or trying to plan your next milestone, you need to make choices and plan your professions.

Road maps

In order to make intelligent choices about your professions, you need a few vital pieces of information. First, a plan. What’s your tolerance for risk, time invested and money invested? Second, you need to take stock of your characters. How many of them are capable of getting two professions maxed out? Are there any professions you don’t need maxed out for your plan? Last, you need to know what you can accomplish with the resources you have.

Once you have all this, you are able to make intelligent decisions.

Do your research

Don’t just pick a profession because you heard somewhere that it’s good for making money. Figure out what you will buy, what you will make and how much it sells for. Every single market I’ve written about has its own profile, and you need to focus on the ones that will do the most for you for the least effort.

Let’s say you’re investigating the cooking market. Use Market Watcher or something like it to keep track of the price of cooked food, raw ingredients and Northern Spices for a week or so. Calculate your margin, make a guesstimate about the volume you could expect, and see how long it would take to pay off leveling cooking.

The law of diminishing returns

It’s right up there with conservation of energy. There is a critical point in every market you enter where the more time you spend, the less profit you get out of it. The only solution is to diversify, because then you can cherry-pick the most profitable parts of every profession and focus on those. Let’s say there’s a market for glyphs on your server that takes you an hour a day on average to serve; will you make more money by introducing another cancel/relist cycle daily, costing you another half hour a day plus all the additional crafting time, or would you make more money by spending that time getting into tailoring? Heck, what if you spent that extra time mining? Farming is never much money per hour (and it’s way less fun for me), but knowing how much you can make per hour circling Sholazar will tell you when you’re just spinning your wheels.

Of course, cherry-picking the most profitable parts of every profession means you have to have more characters and more professions. That’s a significant up-front investment that will need to be paid off before you can even count the profits you’re getting.

The only good death knight

The limitation on primary professions is part of the barrier to entry to creating a crafting empire. You can get around it once, but after that you’re going to have to do all the work. Assuming you have a main at 80 already, you have the ability to train two professions off the bat, and unless your main is a DK, you have the ability to faceroll a baby DK from level 55 to 65 (the minimum level for 450 professions) without much work. Even if your main is a DK, you still have a level 55 or greater character somewhere that you had to level to unlock DK creation (assuming it’s not deleted and it’s still on your main server). Every two profession slots after this will require you to get to 65 the long way.

Bear in mind that certain markets are unavailable for level 65 characters, even if they have 450 professions. I can’t go making the Mongoose enchant on my 65 death knight because the formula drops off someone I’ll never see (well, not until I start leveling my profession alts for Cataclysm, at least).

Additionally, I am involved in a few professions like jewelcrafting where I make much more money off the lower-level markets (prospecting old, lower-level ore) than I do off the Northrend-level markets. If I had needed to limit my leveling time and spending on leveling professions, this could have been a place to do it.

Prioritization

If you plan on being a fairly passive auctioneer, you will want to pick professions that trade scalability for risk. For example, jewelcrafters have the ability to do a very profitable daily, alchemists have the ability to transmute epic gems and tailors have bag cooldowns. You can also trade off between profitability and scalability. Alchemists can AFK transmute titanium any day they can buy the mats for less than they can sell the product.

If you want the ability to scale up and don’t mind a bit of risk or elbow-grease, you can graduate to inscription, enchanting scrolls and mats, selling cut gems, making flasks or potions and selling lower-level bags.

Whether you have 3,000g or 300,000g to your name, spend a few minutes navel-gazing and see whether there’s a change you could make to your profession roster that could make you more efficient.

I put together a list of my favorite celebratory recipes in the game. Here are some crafted items that can help you hold your own in-game 4th of July bash.

Fireworks from engineering

Fireworks are the number one staple of the 4th of July. The celebrations include everything from your hand-held sparklers to the big, blooming explosions thousands of feet above your head. These raucous explosions are a celebration of our country, our history — and also of things that explode.

When you’re talking explosions in Azeroth, you’re talking about engineers. Sure, you can buy some flares and such from vendors, but I’m talking about homebrew fireworks here.

Let’s start with my personal favorites, the red and blue fireworks. You can purchase the blue fireworks if you’re Alliance. Sovik sells the red fireworks to the Horde. The real beauty of these two fireworks is that they’re clearly faction-specific. It’s just a little way of showing your pride. I like to set one off every time I kill someone in Wintergrasp. Since these fireworks only use a Heavy Blasting Powder and a Heavy Leather per stack, that’s no big cost for showing a bit of faction pride.

Still, the red and blue fireworks aren’t the only way to light up the night. Engineering also provides green fireworks and snake burst fireworks. I guess the green fireworks are for druid pride? The snake burst fireworks aren’t quite as cool as they sound, but they’re still a nice little effect for the celebration. You pick up the schematic for snake burst fireworks after doing the quests for Zorbin Fandazzle in Feralas. If you’ve not completed Zapped Giants, you should get out there and get that done.

While they don’t qualify as explosives or fireworks per se, Engineering can also provide additional pyrotechnics by using the Smoke Flare family. The purple smoke flare is my favorite, both because it’s a world drop but also because of its unique color. If you’re not sure what to do with flares, check out this video for some ideas.

Food that makes the party

If you’re roleplaying your celebration, then nearly any food will do. After all, you’re roleplaying through the festivities. But if this is an escapist, out-of-character party, then you might need something with a more visible effect on your avatar. Of course, if you’re looking at crafted food, that means cooking.

The Gigantic Feast is awesome for a party. Sit your group down around the pig for a bit of chow, and everyone will be larger than life within a few moments. The recipe for the feast is sold several places in Dalaran. The materials aren’t too bad either, using only a pair of Deep Sea Monsterbelly and two Rockfin Grouper. It also requires two Chunks o’ Mammoth and some spices, but that’s hardly difficult.

Being big is fun, but I actually like the Small Feast more. There is nothing in Azeroth as amusing as a tiny tauren sprinting around a room. The materials for a Small Feast are similar in proportion to a Gigantic Feast, but slightly different. It uses two Nettlefish, two Glacial Salmon, two Rhino Meat and one Northern Spice.

It’s your world

In the end, the World of Warcraft is a pretty big place. There’s nearly as many ways to throw a party in Azeroth as there are players.

The basic idea behind building your own crafting empire would be that every profession is covered. You have it all. But it’s actually a little bit deeper than that. You not only have to have characters with the requisite recipes, you also must have characters with the requisite gathering progressions who can then perform the gathering for you. It gets a little deep depending on how you design your empire. And it all boils down to one thing.

Your ability to build and conduct your own crafting empire will revolve around your willingness to level alts. The actual class of your alts won’t matter directly but you’ll need at least a few. It is impossible to cover all the professions with fewer than four alts anyway, so you’ll be doing the grind from level 1 to 80 at least three times. (Not four, because you can use a death knight for at least one of these crafters.)

Make three decisions first

A little planning will save you a lot of effort. There are three factors to keep in mind: who will gather your materials for production, whether you care more about “wasted” profession time while levelling or at the end-game, and how you obtain your endgame recipes. Remember: for the purposes of this discussion, the gathering professions are mining, skinning, and herbalism. The production professions are alchemy, blacksmithing, inscription, engineering, leatherworking, tailoring, jewelcrafting, and enchanting. You’ll see right off the bat that you’ll need 6 characters if you have no professions repeated across more than one character. But it rarely works out that way.

Who’s gathering during the end game?

I like grouping my gathering skills on the same characters, as much as possible. For this reason, my “gatherer” tends to be a herbalist and a miner, while my skinner is also a herbalist. The reason for this particular combination is that most mining nodes are not where you find animal mobs. (This is anecdotal experience only; maybe someone has a spreadsheet showing there are .577% more animals near mining nodes than near herb nodes.) My behavior is that I fly around looking for mining nodes and only land when there’s something worthwhile on the ground. If it’s a mining node, there will be no animals. If I’m looking for mobs to skin, I’m more likely to come across herbs than metal.

There is no class the equal of druids for gathering materials. They are easily the most powerful gathering class. This is because of the unparalleled mobility offered by their epic flight form and their aquatic form. Druids don’t even need to shapeshift in order to gather nodes. That makes their reaction speed faster when doing a competitive gathering circuit and it means they have better raw gathering time. Their sea form has no parallel in any other class.

Where do you want to burn your time?

That means the best solution to gathering (so far) is having two druids. However, if your other crafters don’t have any gathering skills, they’ll be walking past all those sweet, sweet nodes on their way to level 80. By comparison, if your production crafters do have a gathering skill, they’ll have only one, which means you’ll be missing two types of resource during gathering runs at endgame. So, where are you going to burn your time? Gathering at endgame or while leveling your production toons?

I choose to waste the time during leveling. In theory, that leveling process is finite. It will end when all of your characters have all of their recipes that are dependent on level or dungeon completion. Heck, leveling stops cold when you’re level 80. It can not expand into infinity.

By comparison, your gathering characters can be gathering almost non-stop. They could be gathering for forty hours a week for untold numbers of weeks. It may never stop! It may extend infinitely into the future until WoW is shut down in blaze of gamer angst.

So while I can’t guarantee which option is shorter, I do know that wasting time in the endgame could expand to a greater amount than the leveling process.

How are you getting your recipes?

In contemporary Wrath of the Lich King, you need to decide now whether you’re learning the Icecrown craftables. If you’re going to sell those items, then your best route for obtaining the recipes would be to have the appropriate production crafters be druids or paladins. This is because they are the only two classes able to switch between all three raid roles.

I’ve never heard of a tank who couldn’t find a raid, nor have I heard of a healer who couldn’t find a raid. At least, not on a long term basis. Eventually, tanks and healers will find a raid who needs one or the other. However, damage characters won’t always have that luxury. Damage characters tend to get booted from a raid roster before other folks. They have it kind of rough that way.

Being a druid or a paladin gives you the most role flexibility. Druids are even more superior in this regard, since they can also choose to be a ranged damage class or a melee damage class. They can truly do every job in the game. As such, since your only goal is getting those recipes and then moving on with your life, choose flexibility.

Plan your characters next

For the reasons I laid out above, your “best bet” for a crafting empire would be to have 5 druids. They have the added bonus of adapting very well as they “grow up” — they have a lot of self-healing, regeneration, and general tactics to help fly through the levels. But the problem with with that plan is … are you really going to level the same class five times in a row?

If you mix up your choice of classes, then you’ll save yourself a little tedium. I grabbed a death knight to minimize the number of times I was lapping the level track. It saved me one trip from 55 to 80. I also have a paladin, for the sake of a little variety. I lastly went mage for a subtle benefit: a mage can teleport> among the capital cities. While Dalaran makes that ability a little less important, the flexibility afforded by a mage can’t be understated. And along the way, I even managed to pick up a little gold in tips for teleporting other folks.

In summary

Choosing which characters will comprise your crafting empire isn’t too hard, but it’s something you should put some thought behind. It’s not easy levelling five different characters, so you should make sure you’re spending your time wisely.

Cooking is one of those secondary professions that anyone can learn, even if they already have two primary professions. Because of this fairly low barrier to entry, there are a lot of cooks around. So many that I’ve actually never leveled it myself! I just rely on the generosity of friends for my cooking business.

How profitable is cooking? That all depends on what you cook. I got into this because I once paid 100g for five Spiced Mammoth Treats for my hunter’s raid night. Why was I buying them on a Tuesday? Poor planning. What did I learn? The value of planning. We’re going to start with a very important concept for auctioneers, here: tenacity.

I’m not talking about tenacity that makes you pwn noobs in Wintergrasp better; I’m talking about the ability to keep a business running for the long haul. More than just this batch, just this week. I reasoned that because everyone can cook, there must be tons of incredibly cheap food for sale on the AH. I reasoned wrong, mostly because most people who can cook only cook for themselves. Instead of increasing supply, they’re lowering demand.

Having the tenacity to acquire supplies and keep stock for sale in the long run can be very profitable. In the short run, you may be undercut, but unless you’re up against someone else with the same tenacity as you, you’ll come out ahead at the end. You can sell raiding consumable food at a very nice markup on raid nights.

Getting mats is the hard part

Northrend cooking for raid consumables requires a lot of random bits of meat and fish. These days, Northrend Spices go for a song (25g for 100 on my realm), but unless you happen to have the time to grind the other mats, you’ll find that the biggest difficulty in getting and holding a stat food market is in procuring mats. You should be checking for food on the AH as often as possible (twice a day, in my case), and don’t forget that if you use Auctioneer, you can set up your snatch list to automatically notify you if your scan contains good deals.

I hear you asking why I wouldn’t recommend just farming it yourself. First of all, farming fish means fishing. Leveling fishing in World of Warcraft is the absolute worst thing you can do to yourself, in my opinion. You must do a repetitive task thousands of times. Each cast takes variable amounts of time, can’t be automated and forces you to not look away. At least I can watch a movie while I mill. Additionally, all the meat you’ll need drops off animals scattered about all over Northrend. Even if you have an epic flier and time to kill, you’d be better served by using that time in a more profitable manner and using those profits to buy what you need from the auction house.

The exception to this is if there is absolutely nothing for sale and the market will support a high enough profit margin that you will make more in the end that you would have by doing whatever your alternative was.

Also, this same logic applies to leveling cooking. Why spend the hours needed to do this, when chances are you can find someone on your server who already has done it, has the most awesome hat in the world (which, by the way, should totally have an equivalent for every other crafting skill) and is willing to cook for you for a tip?

So many recipes!

How do you choose where to start? You have your raid-wide feasts and some of your stat food. For the sake of completeness, here is the complete list of all the current end-game raiding food:

• Fish Feast for most classes (at least some of the time)
• Blackened Dragonfin for agility classes
• Dragonfin Filet for strength classes
• Hearty Rhino for ArP classes
• Imperial Manta Steak and Very Burnt Worg for haste classes
• Mega Mammoth Meal or Poached Northern Sculpin for AP classes
• Rhinolicious Worm Steak for expertise
• Snapper Extreme and Worg Tartare for hit rating
• Spiced Mammoth Treats for pets
• Spiced Worm Burger and Spicy Blue Nettlefish for crit
• Tender Shoveltusk Steak for spellpower

Notably absent are spirit food and MP5, because I’m told there aren’t any healers or casters who value this. Haste, AP, hit and crit all have two equal value foods, one from fishing, one from meat.

Pricing techniques

List a little stock every day. If you’re the only person making this stuff, decide whether to sell high volume at low prices or lower volume at higher margins. Base this decision on your ability to find mats. I have trouble getting Chunk O’ Mammoth reliably, so I sell mammoth-based foods fairly expensively and never undercut. Don’t forget that if you are being undercut and have reason to believe that the person doing this is farming it themselves, this is an opportunity to overcut and buy them out. They have a supply limited to their willingness to spend another hour killing Stoic Mammoths for six stacks of meat.

Tailoring is not the profession most people think of when they think of gold making. Most people will find inscription, enchanting and jewelcrafting are the big money-makers, but what do you do if that’s not the path you’ve chosen?

When you select your profession, there are a lot of reasons to choose one over another. Tailoring has a cool mount and some awesome end game bonuses. If you’ve taken it for these, rest assured that you can still find a niche in the marketplace if you want to make money with it.

Tailoring, like many other professions, has a built in, cooldown based profitability machine. The Glacial Bag is the best non-profession specific bag available in the game at the moment, so there’s always good demand for it. The Moonshroud and Ebonweave it is made from used to have cooldowns on them, however in patch 3.3.3, those cooldowns were eliminated and were replaced by a 7 day cooldown on the bag itself. Make this once a week, and generally you will find that since the supply is fixed, you will be able to turn a decent profit. In general, in fact, bags are awesome for making money.

Bags

Making bags is the cornerstone of tailoring’s profitability. Tailors have the largest selection of bags available to make, and every time someone makes an alt, they have to buy them.

• The Frostweave Bag costs, basically, 60 Frostweave Cloth and 12 Infinite Dust. It has no cooldown, and is only slightly smaller than glacials. You might not find much profit in this, however, because every tailor can make them. Keep a few around for when your competition gets bought out, and be firm on price.
• The Netherweave Bag is still in demand. A small sacrifice of storage space leads to a much lower price point, which is very attractive to players with low level alts. Getting the mats isn’t hard either.
• The Runecloth Bag is also still in demand. Same logic: less space, less money. Lower cost means more demand — lots more.
• If you have a source for the slightly more annoying to collect mats, you can try selling the 18 slot Imbued Netherweave Bag. It requires Netherweb Spider Silk and some Outland enchanting mats, though. This might make it unprofitable, if you have to farm for these.

There are also a nice handful of 32 slot bags that only hold certain types of items:

• The Mysterious Bag is an enchanter’s bag that you can make when you’re revered with the Wyrmrest Accord.
• The Emerald Bag is an herb bag that you can make once you get revered with the Kalu’ak.
• The Abyssal Bag is a soul bag for warlocks that you can make once you’re revered with the Knights of the Ebon Blade.

There’s slightly more of a barrier to entry for people wanting to make these, so in theory that should mean lower supply. At this point in the expansion, however, the reputation requirements are probably not much of an issue for your competition.

Selling bags is a logistical hassle. They don’t stack, some of the mats are from older content, and it can be fairly competitive, with frequent relisting and undercutting. These barriers for entry are in fact more serious than any rep requirement. Well, if something were easy, it wouldn’t be profitable! Get good at AH tactics, and you will find that the bag market falls over for you. Here’s one that I call the market reset:

• Your competition needs the same stuff you do to make bags, so discourage them (and new entrants to the market) by choking their supply. Set a new price point for the mats: buy out the AH twice a day of all mats below 140% market price. Go directly to cloth farmers for CoD deals, and once you’ve emptied out the AH, relist the mats you need for 150% market price.
• Buy your competitors’ bags and relist them at a price consistent with the new value for cloth.

This won’t work if the supply and demand for mats and bags isn’t already a little tight. Luckily, unlike herbs or ore, there don’t seem to be many botters farming cloth these days. Unless someone carpet-bombs the auction house with 1000 stacks of cloth at half price, you should be able to keep on top of supply by adding your own demand. Personally, when my blacksmithing market got carpet bombed by 6g Saronite, I just bought it all. Thousands of stacks of it. I’m still smelting, and it’s been three months.

Making greens for enchanting mats

In addition to bags, all tailors can profit by turning cloth into enchanting mats. Several types of cloth make nice greens that turn into several types of enchanting mats. For Northrend mats, the Duskweave Belt produces Greater Cosmic Essences and Infinite Dusts, and costs 35 Frostweave Cloth and a vendor thread. If, like on my realm, Frostweave is going for 22 silver each, that makes this green cost about 8 gold. If your dust is above 1g, and your essences are above 14g, this is moderately profitable.

Additionally, look into disenchanting:

• Netherweave Pants
• Runecloth Headband
• Silk Headband
• Double-stitched Woolen Shoulders
• White Bandit Mask

These are the most popular disenchantable items for tailoring. There’s a vibrant market for some of these older enchanting mats, so check prices and yields carefully.

Lastly, spellthreads and bolts

Tailors can make spellthreads which can sell fairly well. Also, like many other items, cloth can be turned into bolts of cloth. While most serious crafters will do this themselves, there’s always people picking up mats without the profession who will buy the bolts of cloth. Take a look at all the bolts available, add the mats to your snatch list and watch list, and add the bolts themselves to your watch list. Buy mats when they’re cheap, and sell bolts when there’s little supply or a high price.
