This week we’ll discuss a style of priest healing that is becoming popular among raiders: discipline raid healing. Though the concepts behind it are extremely simple to understand and execute, this style of play seems to have slipped under the radar of many players despite its amazing potential. Tag along with me after the jump and I’ll fill you in on the basics and benefits of disc raid healing. Holy priests, I’m talking to you, too.
Unfortunately for the average discipline priest, there were quick and inappropriate assessments made early in Wrath of the Lich King which tagged discipline as a “tank healing” spec. While I do agree that discipline’s burst response and damage mitigation lend themselves extremely well to healing a tank, there is a great deal of potential that will go untapped if a discipline priest never ventures outside of a little bit of cross healing. Take note – discipline priest are single target healers, not tank healers!
Disclaimer: In the hardest of progression content, I do not encourage cross healing! Remember: “Honor and shame from no condition rise; act well your part, there all the honor lies.” Alexander Pope, An Essay on Man. Do your job, and trust your fellow healers to do theirs. Staying on your target will make it easier to identify where a healing problem is, and that’s the first step to correcting it. If you’re in farm content, however, go nuts – actually, go shadow.

As every good priest knew in season 6, you could buff Divine Spirit rank 6 and 5, and they would count as 2 buffs, without the spirit itself stacking. That way you would have that bit more dispel/purge protection on your important buffs, which might just be giving you the edge you need to pull off a win.
This was nerfed a while ago, but ive now found a new way!
Buff Prayer of Spirit rank 2! (not max rank), and then Divine Spirit rank 6 (max rank).
Same effect, and not that noticeable by others as its 2 different icons

This installment will review my Discipline spec, which is NOT a cookie-cutter build.
To start, plug in those mandatory 14 points:
*PvEers: If you are 100% certain that another Priest in your raid will have Imp:Fort, and not mind buffing, and you REALLY feel the need for threat reduction, you can move these two points into Silent Resolve. I don’t think it’s worth it, but it is an option.
**PvPers: Choose Martyrdom rather than Imp:Fort.
Decide whether this is a Holy build, or a Discipline build. For this example, I’ll walk you through my Disc spec and my reasons for each point. This will be a bit different: because I usually raid Holy, my Holy build is very utilitarian. My Disc build, on the other hand, is specifically for General Vezax Hardmode – the only 25-man fight where I use it. (I do use it in 10 man content for things like Iron Council hardmode, but due to gearing levels, the spec doesn’t need to be perfect to handle the fight.)
Because this is a Disc build, and Disc builds focus on single target or tank healing, after plugging in the mandatory points in the Disc tree, we should flip over to Holy, since we KNOW that we will want Inspiration, and get those points out of the way. This will give a better idea of how many points we have to work with when we are making either-or decisions deep in the Disc tree itself.
The first step is to max out Holy Specialization – I do this in Holy to allow more Haste on my gear, but in Discipline because of how Crit is heavily favored by deeper Discipline talents. Next, because I personally use Renew rather heavily to even out spiking tank damage, I max out Improved Renew.

Talents
Since last time I’ve made a few changes. The more we raided Ulduar, the more I noticed that I rarely used Flash Heals, even less often I used Greater Heal. While scouting through the talents I made a few changes.
I’m gonna link the OLD spec here so you can compare them and see the changes.
Old Spec
First off, my most used heals are normally Renew, Prayer of Healing, Prayer of Mending and Circle of Healing.
I left the Disc-Tree as it was in the previous build, which that means 14 talentpoints spent, down to 3/3 meditation.
1) No more Divine Fury. The only spell that actually gets affected is Greater Heal. Normally I have maybe 2-5 Greater Heals during a full Ulduar 25 run. I used those 5 talentpoints in Spell Warding instead. Survival > Everything.
2) Improved Healing. Useless, also there it really only affects Greater Heal.
3) 3/3 Blessed Resilience. 3% healing on all spells, sounds minor but is really not that bad.
4) 0/5 in Empowered Healing. This is where a lot of people have questioned me. I do not use a lot of flashheals, I aimed for them to heal for atleast 5000 raidbuffed which they do well enough with 3/3 Blessed Resilience but still 0/5 Emp Healing. I rather gain 3% on ALL spells, then huge flashheals that I rarely get the profit from.
The rest of the spec is basically the same as the old one.
General Stats
Mana regen got a pretty big hit from the nerfbat in patch 3.1, 40% less regen from intellect and spirit made spirit an even more obsolete stat to focus on.
In 3.2 replenishment got a slight nerf but however still not enough to make intellect worse then spirit as primary regenstat.
I’m standing on the same spot as in the previous guide, intellect is your regen NOT spirit. This is obviously only if you have replenishment while raiding which I’m going to assume that you have.
In ulduar gear you will notice that you will have a lot of blue sockets and your general stats have probably raised a lot. This opens up for even more balance, thats atleast how I saw it.
If a priest use fort on the commander (Horde – Overlord Agmar and Alliance – High Commander Halford Wyrmbane) in the fortress, they get additional 30% hp or 300k hp (from 800k to 1111k).
I think this is an exploit because the Fort do not generally increase HP by that much.
However Kings will not do anything to the commander.
This is very useful when both fractions got the gate down.

Here’s a quick recap of what is known in the upcoming Priest changes for the 3.2 patch. There has not been a whole lot of changes to the Priest talent trees or to the talents themselves. But let’s go over what we know:
Healing
The signature group heal for Priests (Prayer of Healing) has been nerfed significantly. The spell power percentage has been lowered from 80.7% to 52.6%. Ouch. That’s a pretty strong blow. Prayer of Healing has helped me when I was participating in several of the Ulduar hard modes.
Discipline Priests are going to be annoyed since the cooldown of Penance has increased from 10 seconds to 12 seconds (thereby making the Glyph of Penance almost mandatory).
Lastly a change to Inspiration has it set so that when the buff is active, physical damage taken by targets is reduced by 3/7/10% instead of simply increasing the target’s armor. That may not be a lot, but at least it’s something positive.
Glyph of Power Word: Shield gains a minor change. It now has the ability to activate Divine Aegis.
Shadow
A cool change is that the cooldown on Dispersion has been reduced to 2 minutes (from 3 minutes). That should help Shadow Priests survive a little more whether they are raiding or hitting up battlegrounds.
General Information
Over the course of the season our strategies have developed a lot, and seeing how Priest/Rogue is one of the trademark combos you always hear about I decided it deserved a guide! This guide will be written mostly from a Priest’s perspective, but if any of you Rogues out there have questions feel free to ask and I’ll get that lazy bum on here to answer them.
Builds
Priest 60/11/0
Rogue 41/5/25
Addons
I like to keep my addon count to a minimum, using only Gladius, Focus Frame, and OmniCC. My rogue uses these in addition to Scrolling Combat Text, and ClassTimer.
Macros
There are plenty more macros on the AJ forums, these are just the ones we use.
PRIEST
#showtooltip Shackle Undead
/target Ebon Gargoyle
/cast Shackle Undead
/targetlasttarget
/cast [nopet] Shadowfiend
/petattack
ROGUE
/stopattack
/cast vanish
#showtooltip tricks of the trade
/target [Your Priest]
/cast tricks of the trade
/targetlasttarget
Glyphs
Priest: Glyph of Power World: Shield, Glyph of Renew, Glyph of Dispel Magic
Rogue: Glyph of Preparation, Glyph of Vigor, Glyph of Eviscerate
Here I have takent he macros I use for my priest and the macros priests in my guild use and compiled it into a easy structure for you to cop and paste. Enjoy!
Raid Healing Priest Macros
/stopcasting
/cast Greater Heal
/stopcasting
/cast Renew
/stopcasting
/cast Flash Heal
/stopcasting
/cast Circle of Healing
I think of all the macros, this is probably the most simplistic and effective. It drives me crazy watching healer’s jump or move in order to cancel a heal. This is incredibly inefficient as you lose large amounts of overall healing time throughout the fight. Getting used to a system of stopcasting macros will allow you to turret up and let the heals fly, maximizing your available time to cast heals.
Power Word Shield Macro
/cast [target=player] Power Word: Shield
Pretty simple, just cast a PWS on your self without ever having to drop target. Nice in the heat of an arena match or a raid encounter.
list of friendly macros I have developed and discovered to help get me through Ulduar Hard mode. I play a Shadow/Disc priest, so keep in mind Some of these macros are spec and class specific. I almost always bind them to my 1 key and that way I always have access, and I change them for every fight.
Flame Leviathan
/tar liquid pyrite
/use grab crate
/cast grab crate
/targetlasttarget
Useful as a demolisher passanger to keep your pyrite stocked fully.
Ignis the Furnace Master
/tar Iron Construct
/cast Taunt, Growl, whatever pallys do
Helpful for tanks that struggle with finding the Iron cunstructs during this encounter.
