Damage For your first major glyph, Glyph of Shadow Word: Pain is going to be your best bet. This glyph has been improved significantly from its original form and is now an ideal choice for leveling priests. The only concern is that to get the full benefit of the mana return component, you’ll want all the ticks from your Shadow Word: Pain to go off, so apply your attacks wisely.

It’s time for the second installment of my holy and discipline healing guide. Let’s get started.

Choosing your character’s race

Priest racial abilities disappeared way back when, so there really is no reason to try and argue that certain character races make for a better priest than another these days. You should pick a race that you’re going to be happy with for the days and nights you want to put into this character.

That said, I’m going to give you some food for thought in case you’re open to any of the races. I’ll be looking at it from the perspective of “if you’re going to be doing this, you might want to show this race.” Obviously if your personal preferences direct you elsewhere, you should do that.

Alliance

Draenei
The most influential racial ability of the Draenei is Heroic Presence, their 1% hit bonus to party or raid group. As a healer, the hit won’t do much for you, but if you look at the big picture, the hit is really nice if you want to support a shadow off spec later. Passively, the hit is a kind benefit to your party and raid, and Alliance raid leaders will usually arrange groups so that there is a draenei aura for everyone.

In this latest installment of the shadow priest leveling guide, we’re going to get you from level 20 to level 40. Why level 40? Because level 40 is when the game completely changes. We get Shadowform. We do more damage. We take less damage. We heal ourselves through causing pain. We’re able to make that fateful decision to forsake the light in exchange for causing more destruction more effectively. We become the gnome-destroying (and eating) machines we always knew we could be.

In short, at level 40, priests become awesome.

The spells: levels 20 through 40

Throughout the leveling process, you’ll want to visiting your trainer regularly. You can train to improve the strength of Mind Blast every sixth level (22, 28, 34, etc.) through the leveling process, and similarly improve the strength of Smite every eighth level (22, 30, 38). Beyond that, you’ll also learn the following new spells at key milestones.

This week, we’re digging a bit deeper, getting to 20, rocking some instances and doing some PvP — that’s right, life as a priest is finally ready to begin.

Before you jump back into killing stuff …

When we last left off, our baby priest had just hit level 10, the first major milestone to the end game. World of Warcraft isn’t just about the wanton slaughter of the innocent. It’s also about broiling meats and sewing dresses. You’re allowed to grab two main professions on each character. They’re a terrific source of buffs and sellable materials.

A lot of you will probably pick your professions as soon as you can (level 5), but if you haven’t yet, this is definitely the time. If you’ve already grabbed your professions, now would be a good time to make sure you’re up to speed. As a good rule of thumb, you should increase your skill in each profession by five points per level. (That is, when you hit level 10, you’ll be well up to speed if your professional skills are all at 50 or better.)

Playing dress up

If this priest is going to be your first character ever, well — you’ve got your work cut out for you. It’s a long, though ultimately rewarding road. Keep an eye out for equipment with bonuses to spell power, hit, intellect, or stamina. Even spirit is okay. Avoid stats like strength and agility, since you obviously don’t need them. If the green item that drops doesn’t work for you, sell it on the auction house for a few gold and then use the money to buy green items that do.

For most of you, a new priest will be an alt. You’ll be loaded with advantages if you have the Emblems of Triumph to spend.

Any new shadow priest should be showered with love (read: heirlooms). The Dignified Headmaster’s Charge is the heirloom two-handed weapon of choice to send your aspiring priest, but to give it an extra (and very noticeable) kick, have it enchanted with either Enchant Weapon – Spellpower (+30 spell power) or the slightly more affordable Enchant Weapon – Healing Power (+29 spell power).

One of the great things about playing a warrior is, we don’t have to write a lot about how awesome we are or how we do things better than other classes because we’re cool with who we are. And when we’re not cool with who we are, we slam shields or axes into things until we are.

Things have changed since those days in BC when that post was written. For starters, the big three warrior cooldowns (Recklessness, Retaliation and Shield Wall) are no longer linked and now only take 3 minutes to becomes usable, making them much more active and promoting their use over making the cautious warrior hold onto them for emergencies. While you won’t have Recklessness in the 21 – 40 range, you will gain both Shield Wall and Retaliation in these levels, and you won’t be forced to pick between them.

Also, you’ll get a mount at level 20. Cherish it. When I first leveled a warrior I had to run everywhere until level 40, and at 40 you got the 60% speed mount. Now at level 40 you get an epic! You kids today are spoiled.

We’re in the home stretch now: Northrend. Once we hit our max level I’ll throw out some recommendations dungeon, raiding, and PvP specs. Though admittedly I’m not the best PvPer so you’ll have to bear with me on that and add in your recommendations in the comments. But that all comes at level 80 and we last left off at level 70 with a spec of 9/52/0. This spec still includes the Glyph of Stoneclaw Totem, but if you find you’re tearing apart mobs and barely getting touched I recommend replacing that with Glyph of Stormstrike for the extra nature damage.

Let’s dive in and continue!

Level 71

Talent point: Call of Flame 2/3
Spell upgrades: Flametongue Totem, Flametongue Weapon, Frostbrand Weapon, Healing Stream Totem, Mana Spring Totem, Searing Totem, Stoneclaw Totem, Windfury Weapon

The purpose of this guide is to get you from 1-80 with the best possible talents, the most amount of information, and get good spell selection into practice now. Everything here is designed to keep you alive, keep you moving, help your quest/dungeon mates and get the most out of the class and spec.

By no means are these absolute must-do and must-have rules. Play your class the way you want to play it and the way you enjoy it. But if you’re stuck and not sure what to do, then follow this guide and hopefully it will point you in the right direction.

Read on for BoA gear run down and levels 1-20…

Bind on Account gear

Before we dive in to the leveling guide let’s talk about the BoA gear and enchants. For the armor go for the physical DPS pieces (you are going enhancement, right?), but for trinkets I recommend both if you can.
