WoW Addon Guide: Grab bag

Posted by: free-wow-guide   in WoW Addons, WoW Professions, WoW Shaman Guides

by Mathew McCurley

Today’s Addon Spotlight is a grab bag of sorts. I asked my raid group for their favorite addons, and this is the result.

SquawkAndAwe

Some of my best friends are balance druids. Seriously. In fact, now that I think about it, a good number of my WoW friends are druids of some kind, mostly balance. You know how they say that you can learn a lot about a person by looking at who they surround themselves with? What does the moonkin thing say about me?

Much like ShockandAwe, a staple addon for enhancement shaman, SquawkAndAwe replicates the experience for our boomkin brethren. Squawk provides timers for Eclipse procs, trinket procs and use timers, and everything in between. If you’re a balance druid, you know that watching your buffs and procs intently is the name of the game, so anything that can help out in the slightest could be useful.

This week we’ll finish our look at the Accomplished Angler meta-achievement. As with all matters concerning WoW fishing, El’s Anglin is your best friend here, and more particularly their page on fishing-related achievements (which also addresses a few we don’t cover here, as they’re not part of the Accomplished Angler meta).

Continuing from our previous article on the first set of Accomplished Angler achievements:

The Old Gnome and the Sea

Apparently someone at Blizzard is a Hemingway enthusiast. At any rate, this achievement’s easy as pie, and you’ll get it after fishing successfully from any pool of fish in the game (although it does have to be fish — it can’t be the wreckage pools you need for The Scavenger). You can get this doing either of the following achievements –

WoW Achievement Guide: Accomplished Angler

Posted by: free-wow-guide   in WoW Achievements, WoW Professions

by Allison Robert

Once WoW‘s most disparaged profession, Fishing has experienced a resurgence in Wrath — and it may get even better in Cataclysm, with developers studying fishing from other games like Animal Crossing in order to make it more fun. As far as I’m concerned, as long as they cook up another distraction like the Dalaran fountain in Cataclysm, I’ll be happy.

Accomplished Angler is a very work- and time-intensive meta-achievement, so I’ve taken the liberty of splitting this guide up. The first set of achievements you’ll need:

Grand Master Fisherman

Sorry, folks, there’s no real way to shorten this one; you’ve just got to keep fishing. One of the nice things about the profession is that you can level it anywhere — the only penalty to leveling it in an area with higher “fishing skill” than you currently have is the amount of junk you’ll catch versus actual fish. But on your way to Grand Master, you’ll have put a lot of work in towards:

1000 Fish

No way to cheese this one either, but fortunately it counts objects as fish too. If you’re starting from scratch, the best way to do it might be to combine 1000 Fish with the following achievement, angling for a fish from a low-level area:

One That Didn’t Get Away

WoW: 1-450 Fishing Leveling Guide

Posted by: free-wow-guide   in WoW Leveling Guides, WoW Professions

by Zuggy

Leveling fishing is one of the simplest things to do on World of Warcraft.  All you need is any pool of water in the game, and leveling fishing is as simple as having a fishing pole.  I suggest you start leveling fishing in any of the capital cities that have bodies of water.  This is because all bodies of water have a minimum “no junk” fishing level.  This means in order to get progress in leveling fishing in a given body of water, you have to be at least a certain level of fishing in order to not catch any junk.  A guide to the “no-junk” fishing levels is included further down in this fishing leveling guide.

Here’s my quick 1-450 fishing leveling guide to take you there in no time.

Fishing Leveling Guide: Levels 1-50

  • Visit the fishing trainer to learn Apprentice fishing.
  • You get one level for every fish you land, so just equip your fishing pole, stand near a body of water, and start fishing.  Right click your bobber when you see a splash to reel your fish in.
  • When you reach fishing level 50, go back to the trainer and learn Journeyman Fishing.

This week, in the spirit of consoling people who may not necessarily have a Traveler’s Tundra Mammoth in their immediate future, I’d like to present a series of 5 achievements where at least one of the following is true:

  • They’re an unusual means of making gold in a way people wouldn’t necessarily expect, or:
  • It would be almost impossible not to make a pile of gold while doing them.

Now, a disclaimer; the most obvious picks here would be achievements like Got My Mind On My Money or The Bread Winner, but they’re more a record of your previous looting and questing rather than being something you really have to go for consciously. I’m on the lookout for slightly more interesting ways to grow rich from achievements that are not so directly concerned with moneymaking:

Frostbitten

As a dungeon runner, you don’t have the high requirements usually associated with raids, but there are a couple things you’ll want to keep an eye on. You’ll want to keep reasonably buffed, have some useful macros to fall back on, and have some addons to help organize some of the more procedural steps. Let’s take a look after the break.

Consumables:
For leveling up, generally you’ll just want to keep a good stash of food and water. I recommend learning to cook so that your food will at least boost your stamina up a little bit. Most low level food is primarily stamina and spirit buffs and a lot of them are rather lacking. There are exceptions to that rule, but generally that’s what you’ll see. A lot of holiday food items are pretty good as they will usually scale with your stats. Some holiday food items even have unique buffs to things like hit and defense.

Fishing is helpful for getting something to put over the cooking fire especially if you’re a die-hard dungeon runner and is pretty easy (if not boring) to skill up in and will keep you up to date with cooking supplies.

For secondary buffs on higher end food, if you need more hit, go with hit foods. If you need more threat, go with strength or attack power foods. Otherwise, use whatever consumables you have at your disposal. If you happen to be an alchemist, then try to make some potions, elixirs, or flasks that are useful to you. If you’re an engineer, then lob some dynamite during pulls. Blacksmiths, use those Sharpening Stones and get a little extra threat. Scribes can use the scrolls that they made for skill ups. For leveling dungeons, use what you have available to you. For raiding, you’ll probably want to be a little more precise about your choices.

Profiting with the Fishing Profession can be difficult if you do not have your Cooking skill leveled. There are a few select fish types which you can make a consistent income from, though it will not be nearly as much as if you were to sell the Cooked product.

For maximum profit, it is suggested you fish throughout Northrend, this is where the most sought fish can be gathered. Glacial Salmon / Musselback Sculpin / Nettlefish / Dragonfin Angelfish / Pygmy Suckerfish

A very easy and often quick way of gaining a profit in addition to gathering fish is completing the Fishing Daily, your reward is bound to be at least 7g and can be increased up to 100g, depending on the contents of the Bag of Fishing Treasures you are rewarded.

As with all fishing excursions, it is recommended you use a Fishing Lure to avoid wasted time fishing up Junk items.

Glacial Salmon

Used in Recipes: Firecracker SalmonFish FeastSmall FeastSmoked Salmon

This fish is likely to be your most profitable raw product. While it is only used in a few recipes, they are all fairly widely used. Most casters use Spell Power for their food buff, you will make quite a profit from this fish.

This fish can be found in two zones throughout Northrend: in Schools along the rivers of Grizzly Hills; also fished in open water in Wintergrasp – you will be catching Musselback Sculpin, Nettlefish and Giant Darkwater Clams in addition to Salmon in this location.

Musselback Sculpin

Used in Recipes: Poached Northern SculpinFish FeastGrilled Sculpin

While not all melee type characters will find the Attack Power increase appealing for raiding, there is still a large enough demand for this fish. With how easily and quickly you can gather this fish, you are certain to profit nearly as much as with the Glacial Salmon.

This fish can be found in two zones throughout Northrend: in Schools located in lakes and ponds in Borean Tundra (primarily from Lake Kum’uya located just Southeast of Amber Ledge – 51, 44); also fished in open water in Wintergrasp – you will be catching Glacial Salmon, Nettlefish and Giant Darkwater Clamsin addition to Sculpin in this location.

How you profit from the Cooking Profession will depend on which recipes you have chosen to buy and whether you have Fishing leveled along with Cooking.

The key to profiting from Cooking is the timing in which you use to sell your food. People will be interested in buying food for raiding and running instances, so ideally you want to place them for sale around 3pm-7pm server time as that is when the highest population is active. For the most part, it is generally not a good idea to advertise you are selling something via Trade Channel, but when it comes to food, it is recommended you advertise if done in the 3-7pm bracket. If you advertise during off-peak times, you may end up with more competition than sales.

Spending roughly 10 to 30 minutes a day gathering will keep the cashflow fruitful. Sometimes, if you have excess of one meat, you can sell the raw product along with cooked goods. There are always people leveling their cooking skill, and some willing to pay you for farming the stuff for them.

With Fishing

While you may be tempted to farm one specific type of fish, it is recommended that you farm multiple types for maximum profit. You will also need Northern Spices from the Cooking Dailies in order to combine these recipes. It shouldn’t take too long to fish up a stack or two per fish type, if your fishing skill is maxed. Spend roughly half an hour fishing and it should turn a very nice profit.

The more profitable Cooking with Fish recipes:

Firecracker SalmonSnapper ExtremeSpicy Fried HerringSpicy Blue NettlefishPoached Northern SculpinDragonfin FiletCuttlesteakBlackened Dragonfin

Along with the single-person buff foods listed above, the Fish Feast is easy to fish for and is very popular on raids. You can farm all that you need to make Fish Feasts in Wintergrasp (southern area suggested for least conflict from enemy players), you can farm enough fish to make a 20-stack of Feasts within roughly 20 minutes. Be sure to use a Fishing Lure to avoid wasted time fishing up Junk items.

Fishing Dailies: Blood is Thicker

Posted by: free-wow-guide   in WoW Gold Guides, WoW Professions, WoW Quest Guide

You are required to fish up 5x Bloodtooth Frenzy to complete this quest. The Bloodtooth Frenzy can only be fished up from the waters in Borean Tundra. Before you can fish in the open waters of Borean Tundra, you will need to kill an animal in order to get blood on your character. Killing any beast in the central area of Borean Tundra will grant you the “Animal Blood” debuff. The prime area is near Lake Kum’uya located (51, 44) in Central Borean Tundra. You can kill a Mammoth closeby, Northeastern side of the lake, once you have the debuff you need to wash it off in the water. The debuff will only last for 3 minutes, so make sure you jump in the water soon after killing an animal. When you jump into the water, it will then leave behind a Pool of Blood. Bloodtooth Frenzies can only be fished up from the Pools of Blood. If your Pool runs out before you can gather the 5 Frenzies, you can gain the debuff again by killing an animal and jumping in the water again.

Once you have caught your 5x Bloodtooth Frenzy, you must return them to Marcia Chase located at The Eventide (53, 64) in Southern Dalaran. Marcia will then reward you with: 1x Bag of Fishing Treasures and 250 Kirin Tor Rep.

Fishing Dailies: The Ghostfish

Posted by: free-wow-guide   in WoW Gold Guides, WoW Professions, WoW Quest Guide

You are required to fish up 1x Phantom Ghostfish to complete this quest. The Ghostfish can only be fished up from the lake in the center of Sholazar Basin. Fly your way over to Sholazar, you can fly directly into the River’s Heart if you have the flightpath, otherwise you will need to make your way there. The River’s Heart is located at (48, 63). It doesn’t matter whether you fish in the open water or fish out of schools, the drop rate is the same: random. Once you have caught the Phantom Ghostfish, you must then eat it; it has a limited duration of one minute, so be sure to do this once you catch it.

Once you have eaten the Ghostfish, you will have completed the quest. You must return to Marcia Chase located at The Eventide (53, 64) in Southern Dalaran. Marcia will then reward you with: 1x Bag of Fishing Treasures, 250 Kirin Tor Rep..
